Welcome to Terras Ancestralis !

I am Lucie Drouin, a France-based qualified family and house historian.

Indeed, after my career in international trade, I decided in 2015 to make one of my hobbies my profession. After a Diplôme Universitaire Généalogie et Histoire des Familles (2016), I carried on the studies with the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (Scotland) where I proudly graduated with an MSc (distinction) Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies (2016-2020).

During these years, I tackled new topics and had also the opportunity to dig into my favorite fields: migration, house history and ancestral tourism.

Why migration? Perhaps in response to my family's immobility over the past 400 years. Possibly because of my addiction to travel, foreign lands and languages. Assuredly to trace the journey and the impetus of these people who, over the centuries, opted for new horizons to live, whether by choice or not.

This is also why my MSc dissertation focused on determining the motivations of Norman Protestant exiles to specifically settle in Spitalfields, London (1680-1753); it attempted to demonstrate how understanding these determinants could help to overcome the many barriers faced when researching Huguenot ancestry.

Migrating families or not, gentry folks or agricultural labourers, all our ancestors have a story to tell and to discover through archives; and this is how genealogy is so fascinating.

Just as the walls of a farm have as much to reveal as those of a mansion. Discovering the history of these places, their exterior and interior layout, their inhabitants’ stories...

Beyond a heritage approach, house history is fascinating in that it also provides a visual overview of the daily life of our ancestors.

And what more beautiful achievement to crown these hours of genealogical research, than to visit your region of origin, discover the village where your ancestors lived, find their house, the church where they worshipped… Nothing is more breathtaking than preparing your trip back to your roots and finally (!) walk into your ancestors’ footsteps!
